Everything I learned about Leadership . . .
My day job is working with organizations to improve leadership and organizational effectiveness. Throughout my career I have been very fortunate to work with some of the most exceptional organizations and leaders in various global, Fortune 100 companies. And, I am truly lucky to say that I still really love what I do! One of the things I enjoy most is speaking to groups to share my experiences. Recently, I was asked to speak at a Women’s networking meeting. The night before my speech, as I was preparing, my son Conor asked me what I was doing. I explained to him that I was asked to speak to a group about “Women in Leadership”. He quickly reacted with, “Well that sounds stupid. Women are leaders so what’s the big deal?”
I was first surprised by his reaction and then overwhelmed with HOPE! This is our future. And suddenly, the years of feeling guilty because I was a working mom and being judged for the career choices I had made disappeared. This one comment made everything worthwhile! My children have fully internalized that women are strong, capable, inspirational LEADERS!
Life has a way of giving you perspective just when you need it. This was another significant “A-ha” moment for me; while I have built a career focused on helping leaders and organizations perform, the most significant impact I am making is building our future leaders, right here at home. My call to action is for all of us to focus on what is right in front of us; the most significant impact we can have is developing our future leaders, that is, our children! And for the moms out there, you can have the biggest impact on their lives… and that is the TRUTH!
